Claustrophobia and bloody mayhem collide in the high-adrenaline horror flick The Descent. Six women (including one who lost her husband and child the year before, and one who harbors a bitter secret) spelunk in an unexplored cavern system that turns out to harbor mysterious, predatory creatures. That sums up the story, but--as with writer-director Neil Marshall's previous low-concept movie, Dog Soldiers--the plot doesn't begin to describe the riveting, stomach-lurching thrills this movie provides. The script affords the relatively unknown cast (led by Shauna Macdonald and Natalie Mendoza, both excellent) just enough room to make their characters distinct and genuine, so that when they're dropped into utmost peril our empathy is engaged as much as our fear. The dynamic direction and editing make the cavern a palpable, physical presence, even before the creepy beasts crawl out of their nooks. This is not a movie for everyone; it is extremely gruesome and will induce panic attacks in anyone with even a mild fear of closed spaces. But for anyone seeking something smarter, faster, and more wrenching than static torture-fests like Saw or Hostel, The Descent will draw you into its unsettling ooze. --Bret Fetzer

The Descent  (Rating: 5 out of 5)

This movie was really great, I wasn't expecting much, but this movie has more blood than any horror movie I've seen so far. Good story, very scary at times, and I don't scare easily, enjoyed this movie very much.

Surprising good and suspenseful  (Rating: 4 out of 5)

I really liked this movie. It had an all female cast but not the typical stereotype of being helpless and defenseless. The movie moves fast and has solid pieces of suspense throughout. The ending catches you off guard, not the usual ending. Good solid acting.

Kind of lame, as most horror movies are  (Rating: 2 out of 5)

I'm not usually one for horror movies, but a friend of mine made me watch "The Descent" with her, and it wasn't as awful as I thought it would be. The first half of the movie is scarier than the rest, because it involves a group of six women exploring a dangerous underground cave. Being extremely claustrophobic, that alone was scary enough for me! However, then the women start being hunted by evil Gollum-like creatures who live deep within the cave, and the film takes a turn for the worse. If you're a fan of horror films, you'll probably enjoy "The Descent" because it's gruesome and relatively scary, unlike most of the ridiculous films that currently pepper this film genre. However, if you're like me and don't care much for these type of movies at all, definitely skip this one.

No turkey just a STINKER  (Rating: 1 out of 5)

Wow- i remember renting this when it first came out, and probably would have both excited and scared me if i was 12, ok maybe 13 or even 14. Beyond predictable, and the scary stuff was just smoke and mirrors to me. Really a waste of time as I have seen better B plots. Filmography was decent but that was about it

Geez! The Cave wasn't bad enough!  (Rating: 1 out of 5)

What can I truly say but that I honestly can't imagine what anyone was thinking when making this turkey! Look don't get me wrong I'm all for women getting their due in horror movies and getting the chance to save the day and all but I think that whoever made this forgettable horror movie made one little mistake! He made the entire cast one gender!! Which I hate the idea of for it's one-sidedness! And to be fair I also hated the movie Reservoir Dogs for being an all male cast! I just firmly believe in the balance of Yin and Yang! And it didn't help that the women in this movie were unrelatable.(even to my girlfriend they were) But worse than that the ugly cavedwelling monsters that were killing them off had no original look to them simply because they all looked like Gollum/ Smigel from the Lord of the Rings Trilogy!! the ending was also myopic in that not only didn't I understand what one of the characters memories of her childhood and some birthday party had to do with anything but her going crazy while sitting around a birthday cake was such a complete rip-off of the horror movie "Happy the Birthday to Me".(Which was one awful horror movie to begin with) All I can say is that there just isn't anything to recommend this dreadful movie at all and it's better left either only watched once by the viewer and then never again or better still how about nobody watches it EVER!
