Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Dinner Rush is gourmet cinema, served with a generous helping of culinary panache. After countless commercials, music videos (including Michael Jackson's "Beat It"), and a few obscure features, director and restaurateur Bob Giraldi casts his own New York eatery as a TriBeCa hot spot where the owner (Danny Aiello) presides over a busy night of fine dining and mob entanglements. He's been a bookmaker for 25 years but he's going legit; his son (Edoardo Ballerini) is a nuovo cuisine genius, eager to inherit the business; the sous-chef (Kirk Acevedo) is deeply in debt to mafia thugs; an art-dealer snob (Mark Margolis) is antagonizing his waitress (Summer Phoenix); a charming stranger (John Corbett) harbors a climactic surprise; and a powerful food critic (Sandra Bernhard) is ready to pounce on any wrong move. In perfect control of this bustling environment, Giraldi directs like a great chef cooks: with Altmanesque delicacy, confident that every ingredient is vital to the success of his creation. It's utterly delicious. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews

entertainment--dinner  (Rating: 5 out of 5)

It was just entertaining to see the fellows work in the kitchen, to see the atmosphere/patrons in the dining room. I thought it was fun, and it held my attention to see how things were going to unfold. It's o.k.

Great acting, compelling story  (Rating: 5 out of 5)

I saw this movie in the theater by accident - my friend and I went to see a movie that had left the day before and so we saw "Dinner Rush" instead. I was blown away. I hadn't seen it for awhile until recently and was wondering if I'd still like it. I did. The energy of a busy restaurant, interaction of the compelling characters, and fine acting all around make this a movie worth watching.

Visually rich, good acting, nice twist at the end  (Rating: 4 out of 5)

NO SPOILERS HERE: This is a shorter film than most and is without a gripping plot, but I was captivated by the acting and the visual richness. There are a few interwoven story lines. If you are interested in restaurants and/or cooking, food and restaurant trends, or just the type of films that have more character exploration than action, you will enjoy this one. The actor who played an art critic taking some artists and hangers on to dinner was so effective at his role that I felt uncomfortable watching him. I had an idea of how it would end and was right, but that didn't spoil it for me. Too bad Hollywood never makes sequels to good films like this one - the various story lines leave lots of possibilities.

I love Danny Aeillo - he never gets enough good reviews
