Amazon.com ReviewTurkey or chicken, pheasant or duck, beef or lamb, pork or venison--any poultry, meat, or game benefits from being basted from the inside out. With this simple tool, injecting a marinade is foolproof, easy, and quick, and the result is increased flavor and juiciness. The marinade goes into the syringe, and the syringe's needle delivers it precisely where it's needed, with two holes near the needle's tip distributing a marinade in both directions--right and left--simultaneously. Made of plastic and stainless steel, the injector is durable and the clear plastic syringe permits monitoring of the marinade's supply. The injector is 9 inches long, with a 2-1/2-inch needle, and the needle unscrews for easy cleanup. --Fred Brack
Mountain biker turkey injector (Rating: 5 out of 5) I suppose my review is somewhat missleading, as I used this product to inject Stans Notube sealant into my mountain bike tires.
It worked great for that. Not sure about how it would fair on a turkey.
Nice Design (Rating: 5 out of 5) This is my second flavor injector, and I'm quite happy with it so far.
The design is fairly sturdy, especially for the price. I see one previous reviewer had a problem with it cracking, but it seems pretty durable to me.
The tip is especially hefty compared to the cheap plastic-tipped models some other companies offer (trust me, don't even bother). The stainless steel tip is strong enough to punch right through tough meat cuts without worrying. The tip is also nice and sharp, so you won't have to use too much force in order to puncture the meat in the first place. Just be careful not to impale your hand while searching for it in your messy kitchen drawers. It comes with a little rubber tip cover, but this is meant to be disposable (I think), not as a permanent tip cover. It's hard to get off. If you have a wine cork lying around, just use that.
The dual holes on the tip are on the sides, rather than one hole at the end very end, which the company claims helps inject marinade into the meat in both directions. I buy that argument. It also seems to help reduce pressure inside the meat as you push marinade into it, but this could just be my imagination. The end is ergonomic, and measurements are clearly indicated on the cylinder. Nice.
Another thing I like about this injector is that it is designed to come apart for easy (ok, easiER) cleaning. Everything unscrews and disassembles nicely. Just be careful not to lose any parts down your drain. Admittedly, the tip (needle) can be a pain to clean, as food and marinade can get stick in the point, but this is a problem with all similarly designed tips. Luckily, the tip is wide enough to use twisty ties, pipe cleaners, and tooth picks to get rid of those salmonella hide outs.
Lastly, the tip is wide enough so that clogging is not AS much of a problem as it can be with other models. However, I would still recommend straining or filtering (use a strainer, cheese cloth, tea towel or something) the liquid if the marinade has any large pieces of garlic and such.
On the con side, it's all too easy to lose parts, but hey... I'd rather have it come apart for cleaning than not come apart (sanitation is important).
The only other real criticism is that a thinner tip would make a smaller hole in the meat (juices leak out of holes during cooking, after all). But with thinner tips come increased chance of breakage, and more problems with clogging. And it's not SO thick as to be a real problem. So this is more a minor side note than a real complaint.
All-in-all, an excellent product for the money. Injecting marinates, herb butters, infused oils, and other flavorants into your meat makes a huge difference. And it's so simple. Try injecting saffron water. Or blend your favorite spice blend (such as that rub you're coating the meat with) in some oil or other liquid and inject it directly inside the meat. No longer will all that flavor be confined to the skin. Or use a favorite vinaigrette. The choices are endless, really. Great tool. A must for Thanksgiving turkeys or any large roast bird.
This Thing Put Me In the hospital for 3 Weeks! (Rating: 1 out of 5) Well, I purchased this item from Wal-Mart a few months ago, and well I just feel like I should warn any potential buyers. I was extremely EXCITED to inject my homemade teriyaki sauce (ask me for the recipe!!!) into my beef roll, BUT ran into a HUGE problem. I had the marinade all loaded up and was on my merry way injecting the meat when the injector slipped and stabbed me in the hand!! About 3mL of marinade was injected into my left hand, it hurt like a motherf#%$&@!!! My wife rushed me to the hospital where I sat for over 4 hours waiting to be seen. During this time, I became light-headed, nauseated, and eventually lost consciousness. Apparently my marinade is not meant for intravenous consumption. After regaining consciousness and having my hand thoroughly cleaned, I thought I was going to be fine. BUT I was wrong. 2 days later I became so sick with diarreah and vomiting, that I returned to the hospital only to find that e. coli had made its way into my bloodstream via the injector. This was the last straw. I told my wife to go home and destroy the injector, I did not want anything like this to happen again to anyone in my home! I told her to be "extra careful" while she was taking care of business.
I hope this is a good warning for anyone looking to buy this.
Disposable marinade injector? (Rating: 1 out of 5) To make a long story short, it stopped being functional after 6 months. As stated in other reviews, the union between the plastic and metal needle attachment breaks down and leaks very fast. Maybe it is modeled after disposable injectors? Anyway, if you are short on cash, and plan to use it few times, and throw it away, maybe it is Ok, for the regular user go buy a steel one as i did.
