I recommended this book and others by Dean Ormish for healthy people and people with risk of heart disease. All the technics and suggestions have been proven effective in scientific trials worldwide.
I do want to add that if you have heart disease you should be in a Cardiac Rehabilitation Program to benefit from the ideas of this book.
Life Changing Book (Rating: 5 out of 5) I bought this book after having 5 way bypass surgery in 2001. This book encouraged me to change my diet and develop an exercise program. Now, seven years later, I am 50 pounds lighter, my LDL cholesterol is ~80 and I run 5K's at 61 years of age. I'm in the best shape I've been in in 30 years. It would have been nice to have read this book before I had surgery so I could have avoided the surgery, but I seldom do things until I am really motivated.
Dr. Dean Ornish's Program for Reversing Heart Disease (Rating: 4 out of 5) For the most part, this is an excellent book. However, some of the text is a bit too medical to be easily understood. Dr. Ornish from time to time seems to forget he's writing for lay people and not doctors or dieticians.
The diet itself is very restricted. No fat or meat. While this is a fine ideal to strive for, in the American diet pantry, I don't think it's altogether realistic. I followed the diet for a month and felt weak and exhausted every day. To be entirely honest, I found the diet rather boring.
Heart Healthy (Rating: 5 out of 5) This is a great book. Everything everyone should know to add extra years to their life. Very well written and a book that we can all understand.
